We came of age with an up tempo popular version that was a hit (by The Animals), not recognizing its source. But this is a song with deep and spooky roots, an autobiography, a confession, a plea . . . and a warning. It speaks of a life of sorrow and desperation lived by many a poor soul, calling down to us from long ago. In our arrangement, we hoped to give a fuller voice and testimony to that story."
